  • Artist Story
  • With Filipino artist Chris Gomez, Ivan Macarambon opened the first art space in Iligan and Northern Mindanao, the El Greco Café and Art Gallery. He worked for the Badlis advertising boutique in Cebu in 1990, back when artists literally cut and pasted. In 1995 he became the technical director of MinDulAni, the Mindanao Theater Festival, after a one-year apprenticeship at the Theater Operations Department of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

A culture and arts consultant of the Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental, Macarambon is also an on-call designer of products, packaging, and labels for the Department of Trade and Industry Region 10.

As a painter, he received the juror’s choice award in the GSIS National Painting Competition in 2009 and was a finalist in the China-ASEAN Youth Artwork Creativity Contest in Nanning, China in 2008. He was the Northern Mindanao coordinator for the Committee on Visual Arts of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) from 2004 to 2007.

Macarambon uses a wide range of materials, techniques and styles. For him a material has a greater purpose than its mundane one. A material and the way it is used should fit the subject.

For the PASTiche group exhibit, he creates album covers of fictitious bands, indulging on his parallel passion, listening to music and using its intrinsic nostalgic properties to traverse his timeline.
